Google News Editors’ Picks RSS Feeds enable news publishers to provide up to five links to original news content you believe represents your organization’s best journalistic work at any given moment, and potentially have it displayed on the Google News homepage or select section-based pages.
However, only the WordPress Google News Plugin — or, its little brother the Google News Editors’ Picks Feeds Generator — creates both your homepage and section-based Editors’ Picks Feeds. To view a complete tutorial on how to create custom Google News Editors’ Picks RSS Feeds using the plugin, read CREATING CUSTOM GOOGLE NEWS EDITORS’ PICKS RSS FEEDS WITH WORDPRESS PREMIUM GOOGLE NEWS PLUGIN.
Homepage RSS Feed
Your homepage Editors’ Picks RSS Feed can be given a customized title, i.e. People’s Pundit Daily Picks for the news site, People’s Pundit Daily. You will also have the ability to enter a custom feed description, i.e. The Best Of People’s Pundit Daily.
Please note: Your feed title tag name and image title tag, which is generated from the Alt Text field on the Editors’ Picks RSS Feed admin tab/page, must match in order to successfully validate your feed. The constant “Resources Toolbar” on the admin pages provides a link to a Google-suggested feed validator for your use. The default url for the homepage RSS feed depends upon your site name, but what follows the trailing slashing is constant, i.e. http://www.yoursite.com/feed/editors-picks/.
Section-Based RSS Feed
As previously mentioned, the Editors’ Picks feature is also available in several of Google’s section, topic-specific pages (e.g., Technology). Google says each news site can submit at most one feed for each section and one homepage feed. For example, you could submit one Technology feed, one Business feed, and one homepage feed. The WordPress Premium Google News Plugin will handle both your homepage picks and your site’s niche section-based feed. All of the same rules apply to the section-based feed as noted above for the homepage, and the default url for the section-based RSS feed depends upon your selection, i.e. http://www.yoursite.com/feed/editors-picks-world/, -us/, -technology/, etc.
Custom RSS Meta Descriptions
WordPress RSS Feeds default to the excerpt when including teasers in the feed, which are often too long to even be coherent let alone enticing. The WordPress Premium Google News Plugin allows publishers to enter their own custom meta descriptions that are character limited to ensure would-be readers are enticed into clicking on the article. A custom character counter will make sure you stay within the limit. Write it right, and get more hits!
JS Image Uploader Function
A built-in image uploader powered by Javascript mimics the function used to set an articles featured image, and inserts a Google News compliant logo either directly from your media library or from your computer. It is located on the admin page where you will find a list of Google News compliant instructions to consider when choosing your image. Newsletter Campaign Featured Images
As MailChimp and other newsletter campaign organizers know, typical feeds, to include WordPress feeds, are not designed to add media content of any kind.
With the WordPress Google News Plugin, the custom Google News Editors’ Picks RSS Feeds transform your newsletters into a more attractive campaign, pulling the article’s featured-image into any RSS-based newsletter template and campaign.
